Remember Will May

This song was written for Will May. Deputy William “Will” May of the Walton County (FL) Sheriff’s Office was tragically killed in the line of duty on April 2nd, 2025, while responding to a disturbance call at a Dollar General, where he was shot by a suspect after confronting him; he returned fire, killing the assailant, but succumbed to his injuries later, leaving behind a wife and two children. His death prompted widespread community support, donations for his family, and tributes highlighting his dedicated service and sacrifice.

Lyrics:

In Mossy Head the sun came up like any other day,
Just before 911 and dispatch, work was on its way.
He kissed his badge and clocked in, overtime again,
Just doing what he always did—protecting women and men.
A call came from the Dollar General down the road,
A small-town kind of trouble, nothing he hadn’t known.
He walked them to the doorway, calm as he could be,
Never knowing that moment’s where his last steps would be.

So fly that flag at half-mast, let the blue lights shine,
Walton County’s hurting, left a piece behind.
He wore his star with honor, stood his sacred ground,
Deputy Will May, laid his life down.
He answered when the world called out in pain,
He won’t be forgotten—say his name.

Second generation, it ran deep in his blood,
A daddy fighting fires, a mama on the phone line’s hum.
He learned what service meant before he learned to drive,
Some folks are born to give, some are born to stand the line.
The vest upon his chest couldn’t stop that fate,
A cruel twist of seconds, came just a heartbeat late.
He fought to protect others, like he always had done,
A hero to the finish, till the setting of his sun.

So fly that flag at half-mast, let the blue lights shine,
From DeFuniak Springs to every county line.
He wore his star with honor, stood his sacred ground,
Deputy Will May, laid his life down.
He answered when the world called out in pain,
He won’t be forgotten—say his name.

There’s a silence in the radio, a chair that won’t be filled,
Boots by the doorway, time standing still.
But in every prayer whispered, every candle flame,
Lives the courage and the heart of Will May.

So fly that flag at half-mast, let the sirens cry,
He served with everything till the day he died.
Thirty-eight years young, but a legacy profound,
Deputy Will May, forever bound

To the county he loved, the badge he bore,
We’ll guard your memory now and always more.
Rest easy, brother, your watch is done,
We’ll take it from here ‘til our race is run.
In Walton County nights, when the stars all stay,
We’ll remember the life of Will May.
